About Meals on Wheels:
Meals on Wheels of Winnipeg has a long history of service to Winnipeggers. The first meals were delivered in June of 1965 and since that time the program has grown substantially. Today, our volunteers deliver to a client list that, over the course of a year, exceeds 1000 clients. In 2008 alone,we provided over 200,000 meals to clients in almost every corner of Winnipeg. The bulk of our meals are prepared at the WHRA Regional Distribution Facility, to be picked up by the volunteers at hospitals throughout the city. In addition, several personal care homes and one community centre also provide meals for delivery to our clients.
More than Just a Meal...
The service that Meals on Wheels provides is often more than just food. The daily visit by a volunteer is just as important as the food that they bring. For many clients our volunteer’s delivery may be their only contact with another individual in a day. For their families and friends, the knowledge that a trained volunteer checks in on a regular basis is some reassurance that their family member is okay. We work closely with other agencies to provide these services.
Our staff communicate directly with representatives of Home Care, both in the community and in hospitals. Also, our work with Employment and Income Assistance of Manitoba, the Public Trustee of Manitoba, the Department of Veterans Affairs and Manitoba Public Insurance allows us to offer daily, hot meals to as many people as possible.
